In Matthew 16:18 Jesus said, “I will build my church.” The Greek word Jesus used for church is ekklesia. But ekklesia is not a religious word. In the ancient Greek and Roman world, ecclesia described a called-out assembly of citizens, summoned to conduct the governing business of the city. Not a simple gathering, not a religious meeting, a governing body, exercising dominion.
